Christoph Bacher Archäologie Ancient Art ist die erste Galerie in Wien, die sich ausschließlich mit der Kunst der Antike beschäftigt. Der Zeitrahmen reicht dabei von 6.000 vor Christus bis ins
6. Jahrhundert nach Christus. Geografisch erstrecken sich die Grenzen von den iberischen Kulturen im Westen über Ägypten und Nubien im Süden bis zum ostiranischen Kulturkreis. Selbstverständlich liegt ein besonderer Schwerpunkt auf den Künsten des antiken Griechenland und des Römischen Reiches.

Unsere Galerie zeigt seit Anfang April eine große Auswahl an Objekten in Museumsqualität in den Räumlichkeiten am Wiener Stubenring Nr. 20. Diese Stücke faszinieren nicht nur durch ihre besondere Schönheit und den hohen ästhetischen Wert, sondern auch durch ihre kulturhistorische Bedeutung.

Illyrischer Helm

6. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

Aus einer einzigen Bronzeplatte gehämmerter Helm des Illyrischen Typs II mit rechteckigem Gesichtsausschnitt, zwei erhabenen, über die Kalotte laufenden Rippen und spitzwinkeliger Einziehung vor dem horizontal abstehenden Nackenschutz. An dem Nagel über der Stirn wurde in der Antike der Federbusch fixiert. Schöne grüne Patina. Der Name Illyrien geht zurück auf das Land an der Ostküste des Adriatischen Meeres, gleichzusetzen mit dem modernen Serbien und Albanien. Der römische Historiker Appian schrieb, dass die Illyrier das Land südlich der Makedonen und Thraker bewohnten. Tradionellerweise waren die Illyrier Bauern und Bergleute, in Kriegszeiten wurden sie jedoch als kampferprobte Soldaten geschätzt, vornehmlich für die Infantrie.

Spätrömischer Gedenkstein

6. Jahrhundert n. Chr.

Marmor-Gedenkstein aus dem 6. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Die emotionale Widmung stammt von einem Ehemann für seine verstorbene Gattin. Er nennt sie "Süßeste - Dulcissime" und bedauert sein Unglück, weil sie schon mit 28 Jahren sterben musste.

Attische Bauchlekythos

Ende 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

Kleine rotfigurige Bauchlekythos mit geschwungenem Henkel. Die Bildfläche zeigt einen Malteser im dichten Pelz, der den Kopf zum buschigen Schwanz wendet, an den Seiten je eine stilisierte Ranke. Leichte Versinterungen, an der Rückseite ein stabiler Haarriss, sonst intakt.

Römisches Fragment eines Weihereliefs mit griechischer Inschrift. Laut früherem Sammler aus einem Tempel an der heutigen bulgarisch-serbischen Grenze.

Spätrömische Öllampe

ca. 5. Jahrhundert n. Chr.

Die Oberseite mit besonders schöner plastischer Darstellung eines nach rechts springenden Pferdes, außen kräftiges Kerbdekor. In der Mitte zwei Fülllöcher und am Lampenende eine Griffnoppe. Die Unterseite mit Verzierung versehen. Intakt.

Parthisches Beinidol aus Röhrenknochen

2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.-2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.

Spitz zulaufender, ungegliederter Körper, der Kopf ist durch eine horizontale Kerbe getrennt und zeigt Augen und Brauen mit rötlicher Deckfarbe. An beiden Seiten einwärts gerollte Haarlocken. Gesockelt. Intakt.

Etruskischer Votivkopf

3.-1. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

Kopf einer jungen Frau mit einem über den Hinterkopf gelegten Mantel. Gelocktes Haar, fein gearbeiteter Mund und ausgeprägte Nase. Hohl und auf der Unterseite offen. Weihegaben wie diese waren für Gottheiten bestimmt, von denen man sich Schutz vor Krankheiten erhoffte.

Assyrisches Relief

1. Jahrtausend v. Chr.

Erhabenes Relief eines bärtigen Würdenträgers. Die langen Haare fallen ihm in den Nacken, am Kopf trägt er ein markantes Diadem. Original Farbreste. Im Holzrahmen aus den 1980er Jahren.

Welcome to the world of ancient art!

Christoph Bacher Archäologie Ancient Art is the first gallery in Vienna which exclusively deals with ancient art. The time period ranges from 6000 B.C. to 600 A.D. Geographically the borders are from the Iberian cultures in the west, to Egypt and Nubia in the south to the Iranian cultures in the east. Certainly there is special emphasis on artworks from Ancient Greek and the Roman Empire.

Our gallery has presented a large selection of objects with museum quality in our gallery exhibition room in Stubenring 20, 1010 Vienna, Austria. These pieces not only fascinate us with their extraordinary beauty and high aesthetic value, but also with their significance in cultural history.

Our highlight of the month:

Illyrian Helmet

ca. 6th century B.C.

Helmet of the Illyrian Type II, hammered of a single sheet, with rectangular open-faced design; short, gently sloping neck-guard with a perforation at the center of the forehead for attachment of a crest between the two raised parallel double ridges across the crown. Beautiful green patina. Illyria refers to an ancient region situated along the Eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea. The Roman historian Appian wrote that the Illyrians inhabited the lands beyond Macedon and Thrace, roughly equivalent to modern Serbia and Albania. Traditionally they were farmers and miners, but in war times they were preferred soldiers primarily for the infantry.

Attic Squat Lekythos depicting a Maltese Dog

Late 5th century B.C.

A miniature black glazed squat Lekythos, with an applied loop handle and funnel tip mouth, an exaggerated bulbous lower half sitting atop of a torus ring foot. The center depicting a Maltese dog. Stylized tendrils on both sides.

Late Roman Oil Lamp

5th century A.D.

On the upper side a depiction of a horse jumping to the right, a band of strong notch-decor around. In the center two holes to fill in oil, at the rear a small knob. At the bottom ornaments with waves and circles.

Parthian Bone Votive

2nd century B.C. - 2nd century A.D.

The smooth, lanceolate front part is slightly convex and displays a pointed lower body part without structure. The head part is seperated by a horizontale incision from the body, the topskull is flattened. The head area has some remains of red topcoat which is clearly applied on eyes and brows. On each side one hairlock, in the area of the incision curled inwards. Mounted.

Etruscan Votive Head

3rd-1st century B.C.

Votive offering. Head of a woman covered with a veil over her head. Curly hair is visible along her hairline, a delicate mouth with full lips, a distinctive nose and a prominent chin. Hollow and open at the bottom side. Such votive objects were offered to the gods hoping for protection against and healing of diseases. Probably heads like these - contrary to votive offerings with particular body parts in terracotta - do not refer to special illnesses. They rather envision the dedicating person as pars pro toto.

Upper corner section from a relief carved plaque, depicting the profile head and upper torso of a male dignitary having a long, full beard and long finely striated hairdo, wearing a headband. Black painted hair, beard and facial features. Mounted in a hardwood display stand from the 1980s.
