The Rediscovery of a Published Funerary Stele

LSB

A couple of months ago the gallery acquired a funerary stele dating to the 3rd century A.D., which in particular was fascinating for its long Greek inscription in nine lines. Undisputed is its origin from Asia Minor, the text, it soon turned out, mentioned the names Ulysses and Penelope. But it took until the beginning of April when the highly talented young Viennese epigraphist Katharina Michner MA locked herself in the gallery for several hours to completely solve the mystery of the inscription. The result surprised everyone: The funerary stele originates from Rhosos in Cilicia and was dedicated to a young woman named Berous who died with only 22 years. Her mourning husband, left alone with three underage children, compares her in the text to Ulysses' wife Penelope. But that was not all: Michner found out that the stele was already in 1931 verified in the residence of the French delegate Pierre Durieux in Alexandrette, between 1953 and 1969 it was published at least four times, the text translated respectively as often. Thence Berous' emotional legacy remained, almost forgotten, in a European family estate before it found its way to Vienna. We now proudly present the marble memento of "The Penelope from Rhosos" at our exhibtion "Traces of Stone" for the first time again in public after almost 50 years. The opening takes place on 8 May at 7 p.m. in our showroom in Untere Viaduktgasse 55. We are looking forward to your visit!

Furthermore we are especially delighted that the Austrian artist Nicole Krenn in connection with the exhibtion sets her contemporary graphic work in an exciting dialogue with ancient stone masterworks. With her two series "Black Nights" and "Apocalypse" she thematises in artistic cartographs traces in alpine limestone. Once again it becomes visible how contemporary and ancient art perfectly harmonize together. And how timeless thousands of years old masterpieces are.

Yours sincerely,

Christoph Bacher

Multiple-Published Funerary Stele for Berous

[:en]LSB[:en]LSB[:en]LSB

Greece/Rhosos in Cilicia – 3rd century A.D.

Important funerary stele of white marble, found in Rhosos in Cilicia and verified for the first time in 1931 in the residence of the French delegate in Alexandrette. The relief has a gable with corner acroterions and rosettes, amongst them garlands and bucrania. Four resting persons are depicted between two side columns , two men and two women. Left in front of the column another mourner, on the far right a slave. Of special importance is the inscription of nine lines based on Homer, which was published for the first time in 1953 and thence at least three more times. In the diligently written inscription the mourners grieve “Berous, equal to a Penelope, who died with 22 years and left three underage children to their father”. The text reads: 1. But Berous – her father was Chrysippos – was of noble nature and really, not (only) in the saga, a Penelope: chaste during her marriage, sober in life, a good housewife and the guiding star in (my) life. With 22 years she untimely dies and leaves three underage children to their dear father. Here she lies, Stranger! May the Gods bless you when you say: “May the ground lie lightly on Berous!” Chrysippos, Berous, Nikephoros, Nikaios and Soteris, you have not saddened nobody, farewell.

Herzlich, Ihr

Christoph Bacher

Mehrfach publizierte Grabstele der Berous aus Rhosos in Kilikien

[:en]LSB[:en]LSB[:en]LSB[:en]LSB

[:en]LSB[:en]LSB[:en]LSB

Griechenland/Rhosos in Kilikien – 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
