Provenance: Austrian private collection of Prof. Josef Mairitsch (1938-1994). Acquired between 1960 and the early 1980s. In the family collection ever since. With a collection note, although this dates the chalice as “Achaemenid.”
Condition: Minor chips on the rim have been restored, there is a small chip on the base. The handle has likely been restored.
Description: Large single-handled chalice of grey polished pottery from the northwestern Iranian settlement hill of Hasanlu Tepe. The vessel stands on a high, trumpet-shaped foot. The body is ovoid, the neck tapers inward, and the rim flares outward. The handle attaches to the neck, curves in a semi-circular arc, and ends at the body. Compare this type to the cup in the British Museum with the museum number 131079.
