Description: Graceful terracotta bust of a woman from the Hellenistic period wearing an elaborate melon hairstyle. Her hair is divided into braided sections, drawn tightly towards the back of the head and then arranged into a double wreath of hair. This type of hairstyle had great popularity from the Classical period through to the Roman Imperial era. The woman depicted here is young and probably of high status. Her facial features are exceptionally delicate, her expression gentle yet self-confident. A veil covers the back of her head and falls over her left shoulder. On the back side is an old collection label dating from the mid-20th century. Mounted on an old wooden base bearing two further collection labels on the underside.
