ART&ANTIQUE Salzburg
Visit us at the Major Easter Art Fair

For the first time after three years we will be there again: This coming Friday, 31 March, ART&ANTIQUE, Salzburg's international Easter art fair will start. As the only gallery for ancient art, we present highlights such as the magnificent black-figure amphora of the Leagros Group, which shows the farewell of a hoplite and an archer. On the other side Satyrs joyfully and playfully dance around god Hermes. Of course, we also have Egyptian, Roman and Near Eastern masterpieces with us. The compilation of ancient helmets at our stand, including the spectacular 3,000-year-old Caucasian conical helmet, will be definitely of museum-quality.

A Collection of Ancient Seals and Amulets. In case you are still looking for an exceptional, affordable Easter gift, we might have a recommendation. What about a millennium-old seal or amulet as a jewellery around the neck? We succeeded in acquiring over 300 amulets and seals from the Oberländer collection, the oldest of them 8,000, the youngest 1,500 years old. In ancient times they symbolized the individuality of the owner – and that has not changed until today. A selection of this important collection is presented below. Also included: the (Easter) bunny on a Sasanian seal.

Yours sincerely,
Christoph Bacher

ART&ANTIQUE SalzburgBesuchen Sie

Herzlich,
Christoph Bacher

Our Highlight of the Month:

Attic black figure amphora leagros group A
Attic black figure amphora leagros group B

Attic Black-figure Amphora of the Leagros Group

Greece – 525-500 B.C.
Large Attic amphora decorated abundantly in black-figure technique. One side depicts the bearded Hermes with a long coat wearing a petasos. He is flanked by two nude dancing Satyrs. Above the god his staff, the caduceus with the two serpent heads. The Satyr facing to the right reaches out to the petasos on Hermes’ head, while a panther seems to bite in his tail on the back. A third Satyr bends down to the panther. The scene is flanked by palmettes and lotus blossoms. Above tongue decoration in red and black. At the bottom an encircling bud arch frieze and ray decoration. The other side depicts two warriors at a farewell scene. They wear lances, helmets and shields. A dog at their feet looks up to a woman with a long gown with a veil, possibly the mother of both warriors. To bid goodbye she raises her hand which is covered with a coat thrown over. Behind both warriors stands an elderly man, possibly their father, with a civic staff. He also wears a coat. The warriors seem to be brothers. While one with a Corinthian helmet with a high crest is clearly identified as a hoplite, the other one with a conical helmet could be an archer. The amphora is attributed to the Leagros Group, one of the last important workshops of the black-figure style, which is known for its large format images on vases.

Provenance: English private collection, acquired in the 1980s from La Reine Margot Paris.
Dimensions: 45 cm high
Price: 28 000 Euro

Attische schwarzfigurige Amphora der Leagros-Gruppe

Griechenland – 525-500 v. Chr.

Preis: 28.000 Euro

Assyrian babylonian bronze helmet
Assyrian babylonian bronze helmet back

Caucasian Conical Helmet

Caucasus – around 1000 B.C.
Almost perfectly preserved conical helmet, which was made from one single bronze sheet inclusive its cheek guards. The calotte is slightly arched outwards and tapering to a high point. The bottom of the helmet has pairs of holes along the face cut-out, the cheek guards and the rear part, which were used to attach a helmet lining that was flanged outwards. The overlapping ends of the rolled bronze sheet are fixed at the back with four clasps, which all are still preserved. Above the second clasp is another pair of holes, where the organic helmet decoration was affixed. The helmet originates from northern Caucasus. Until recently helmets like the present one were attributed to the Neo-Assyrian or Urartian culture. Anyway, the Russian historian Askold Igorevich Ivantchik was able to prove coherently in his article “Kimmerer und Skythen”, in: “Steppenvölker Eurasiens”, volume II, 2001, as of page 226, that only Caucasian helmets were driven from one piece of bronze sheet, inclusive the cheek guards and were left undecorated throughout. Near Eastern helmets in contrary were cast, had separately affixed cheek guards (or none at all) and were decorated with engravings. Therefore, the assumption that this helmet type came to the Caucasus region through raids by the Cimmerians and Scythes seems to be refuted. See for the type with wrong attribution Roland Sennewald and Stefano Borin “Die Kriegskunst der Assyrer von Sargon II. bis Assurbanipal”, Berlin 2022, page 106. As well as the almost identical helmet in tomb 186 of the necropolis Klein-jar III at Kislovodsk, published in “Kimmerer und Skythen”, in: „Steppenvölker Eurasiens“, volume II, 2001, fig. 61, p. 131. Mounted.

Provenance: From the collection A. S., Berlin, Germany, acquired 2008 in the US gallery Kosykin. Prior in a US private collection.
Dimensions: 36 cm high
Price: 26 000 Euro

Kaukasischer Spitzhelm

Kaukasus – um 1000 v. Chr.
Gesockelt.

Chukchi People Seated Walrus Ivory Figure

Siberia – 1500-1700 A.D.
Rare and expressively worked out figure of a seated walrus ivory man. The unclothed figure with cropped hair, large flat ears, a long, semi-circular head and deep eyes looking straight. His mouth is small, and he seems to be lost in his thoughts, tired, possibly bored. His crossed arms are resting on his knees. Fingers and toes are accentuated. The extremely adorable figure with its strong expression is typical for the artistic walrus ivory carvings by the Siberian Chukchi people. The indigenous people from the Russian far east successfully defended themselves against Christianisation until the 19th century. The russification only started during the time of the Soviet Union. Today, about 15,000 Chukchi still live on the peninsula of the same name, about 10,000 of them still speak the traditional Paleo-Siberian language. With a beautiful, aged patina. Mounted.

Provenance: From an old Belgian private collection. Last with Sotheby's Paris on July 7, 2021, lot 66.

Sitzende Figur aus Walrosselfenbein der Tschuktschen

Sibirien – 1500-1700 n. Chr.
Gesockelt.

Provenienz: Aus alter belgischer Privatsammlung. Zuletzt bei Sotheby’s Paris am 7. Juli 2021, Los 66.
Höhe: 8,5 cm

The translation reads: "The people honoured Hermogenes, son of Dionysius Quillibonus?, 75 (years). Under Aeneas, on 16th of the month Xandikos, Elea, wife of Hermogenes, daughter of Hikesios, 48 years."
