An Artistic Year's End with the Ancient Gods

To the year's end I am delighted to present to you several masterworks of ancient art. The bronze statuette of Osiris is simply due to its size and detailed workmanship one of the most important bronze objects we have been able to offer in the recent months. The monumental alabaster bull from a Sabaean workshop radiates such an archaic energy that hardly any artwork can muster nowadays. And the charming Roman bronze statuette of Mercury proves that the ancient gods still have not lost their charisma after 2,000 years.

The Opening of our major Christmas exhibition on 15 December: In case you are still looking for a gift that is guaranteed to surprise everyone and that no one else will find under the Christmas tree – then visit us! Christoph Bacher

South Arabian Sabaean bull protome of a libation table front

Monumental Sabaean Bull Protome with a Drain

Kingdom of Saba – 4th-2nd century B.C.
Monumental alabaster bull protome which once served as a drain of an altar or a gargoyle. The bull with a stylized head, large protruding eyes with four curved folds above. The horns are short and rounded, the ears sculpturally worked out and resting. The back of the head and the back itself are traversed by a sharp-edged channel through which the libation could flow. On the one hand the bull served as the symbolic animal of various deities, such as for Almaqah in Sheba or Anbi in Qataban, on the other hand it assumed an overlapping protection role. This is how depiction of bulls on amulets, funerary steles and on house facades are to be interpreted. The monumental seize of these bull protomes suggests that it was part of a massive altar for libation or a gargoyle. See for the type “Jemen – Kunst und Archäologie im Land der Königin von Saba”, Wilfried Seipel (Hrsg.), Nr. 170 and Nr. 223. Mounted.

Provenance: From the private estate of the well-known Parisian art dealer François Antonovich (born 1934), acquired in the 1970s.
Dimensions: 31.5 cm long
Price: 16 000 Euro

Monumentale sabäische Stier-Protome mit Abflussrinne

Königreich Saba – 4.-2. Jahrhundert v. Chr.

Ostgriechisches Glas-Alabastron in Sandkerntechnik

Ostgriechenland – 5.-4. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
