A Festival of Ancient Art!
The Salzburger Festspiele rank as one of the most important cultural events in the world. Within the setting of this festival from 12 to 20 August the exclusive art fair ART&ANTIQUE takes place, to which only eleven selected galleries from Austria and Germany are permitted. All the more we are delighted to be so far the first and only gallery for ancient art to exhibit this year in Salzburg. Please come and visit us, and be enchanted by artworks thousands of years old. SAVE THE DATE: Shortly afterwards we will demonstrate in our showroom in Vienna that ancient and contemporary art are not contradictory, but rather a perfect completion. Together with the contemporary photographer Paul Landerl we are inviting on 20 September at 19:00 hrs to the exhibition "Porträts der Antike". Venue: Untere Viaduktgasse 55, 1030 Vienna. This is just the beginning of an intensive art autumn with ancient masterpieces: From 29 September to 1 October you will find us at "Kunstsalon Perchtoldsdorf", from 7 to 15 October at the brand new "FairForArt Vienna", and traditionally from 4 to 12 November at the ART&ANTIQUE in the Wiener Hofburg. Roman Empire – 2nd century A.D.
Torso of the standing Dionysus of white-grey marble with his typical panther fur thrown over his left shoulder and tied over his right hip. The paws of the animal are knotted on the left shoulder, the panther head rests on the god’s right chest. The weight of the statue was on the right leg, the hip therefore slightly turned to the left and the left shoulder lowered. A slightly smaller-than-life-size torso of a god of charming quality. Mounted.

Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, 1994-1648 B.C. Diorite bust of a dignitary with delicate features, almond-shaped eyes and a straight wig, leaving the ears bare. Shoulders, chest and abs realistically worked out. On the back two vertical hieroglyph lines beginning with an offering phrase. Above in red an old collection number. Mounted.

Egypt – Ptolemaic period, 332-30 B.C.
Two belonging sarcophagus panels with rich, polychrome painting. On the top lotus blossoms, followed by a broad collar. Below deities of the divine tribunal, seated on a scarab holding a sun disk (representation of god Khepri). Below left and right two Horus eyes and the winged goddess Maat, whose feather is weighed against the heart of the deceased. The following image area depicts in detail the mummification by the jackal-headed god Anubis, as well as a procession of the dead led by Anubis. The lower section is decorated with high red lotus flowers and three columns of hieroglyphs. Mounted. Provenance: Belgian private collection, acquired on 4 July 1972 at gallery Carrefour. Accompanied by the original handwritten expertise by the owner Pierre Vérité.

Etruria – 4th-3rd century B.C.
Solid bronze statuette of Poseidon, the god of the Sea and other waters depicted with his weight on the right leg, the left leg bent and put forward sideways. A dolphin lies over the left arm stretched forward, in his right raised hand holding a trident. The god’s round face is bearded, with short hair, a filet framing forehead and face semi-circularly. The legs are connected with a bronze bracket, which suggests that the statuette once crowned a high-quality vessel or another metal object. Published in: “Gods and Mortals No. 7”, New York 1989. Mounted. Provenance: Morven collection, acquired in Israel between 1950 and 1960. Royal Athena Gallery New York. Christie’s sale in New York on 8 June 2004, lot 438. Most recently in a Portuguese private collection.

Sumerian Lapis Lazuli Amulet of an Ibex Mesopotamia – Early dynastic period, 2800-2340 B.C.
Exquisite lapis lazuli amulet depicting a lying ibex whose head is resting backwards in the shoulders. The fore- and hind legs are bent, where the hooves are almost touching each other. The tail and horns are finely ribbed. Numerous details in the face and ears. On the back a broad, drilled ring for suspension. Of exceptionally good quality. Provenance: From the prominent Swiss private collection Surena, Zürich, acquired prior to 1980. Thence in a US private collection.

Small, double-sided inscribed old Babylonian cuneiform tablet. The inscription with four lines on one side describes two receipts for barley, comprising for eight days each. One line on the back revolving. Inscription very clearly legible. Provenance: Collection Kaye Fredericks, USA.

Etrurien – 3rd century B.C.
Expressive head of a youth with thick, curly hair and fine features. His eyes are almond-shaped with broad lids, his mouth with distinct lips is slightly open. The young man wears a toga, according to the Roman rite, pulled over his head. This characteristic can especially be seen on votive heads which originate from Etruscan-middle Italian sanctuaries, located in the Roman area of influence (see Lavinio and Capua). Provenance: French private collection, acquired in February 1988 at gallery Carrefour in Paris. With a handwritten original expertise from Pierre Vérité. Accompanied by a French antiquity passport.

Roman – 1st-2nd century A.D.
Marble fragment of a once life-size statue of Dionysus, the Roman Bacchus. The hand of the young god holds a jug. Thumb, middle- and ring finger covering the handle on one side, index- and little finger the other. The hand is in a right angle from the jug. The jug, possibly an oenochoe, has an ovoid body, with a circular beak-shaped spout. It is hollow inside, possibly to let water run out of it. The hand attitude is identical to the famous Bacchus from Aldaia, today in the "Museu de Prehistoria Valencia". Roman copy from a Greek original of 4th-3rd century BC. Mounted.

High-quality fragment of a wood furniture depicting the winged Isis standing with stretched out arms and wings. She holds a red sun disk above her head, wings, feathers, body and face jewellery with rich yellow, red, black and green color remains. A wood fragment of high quality. The back in red color with three different collection numbers.

Levant – 8th-7th century B.C.
Hammered bronze bowl with a central omphalos, framed by a circular dotted decoration and a line-band. The outer dotted band serves as a baseline for the actual frieze, depicting four finely worked stags with long ears and magnificent antlers. The bodies dotted. Between the stags are trees with long branches and large fruits. Below the rim another hatched band. Provenance: US private collection from the 1980s. Thence Christie’s New York on 6 December 2007, lot 541 (sold for 10 000 US Dollar). Thence French private collection. Accompanied by a French antiquities passport.

Greece – Early 7th century B.C.
Geometrical horse with raised, semi-circular crest and cylindrical snout. The eyes are circularly punched, the ears raised. The long tail almost reaching the bottom. The legs are long and slightly bent, the hooves slightly stretched forwards.

Roman Empire – 1st-2nd century A.D.
An arm of fine crystalline marble of a Zeus statuette belonging to a sculptural group. This assumption is confirmed by a connection pin behind the elbow. Index finger and thumb touching each other on the tips and were once holding Zeus’ lightning bolts, missing today. The other three fingers bent in parallel position. The upper arm muscles are still preserved. Mounted.

Römisches Reich – 2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
Torso des stehenden Dionysos aus weißgrauem Marmor, das für ihn typische Pantherfell von der linken Schulter über die rechte Hüfte gebunden. Die Tatzen des Tieres sind an der linken Schulter verknotet, der Pantherkopf liegt an der rechten Leiste des Gottes auf. Das Gewicht der Statue ruhte auf dem rechten Bein, die Hüfte daher leicht nach links ausgeschwungen und die linke Schulter abgesenkt. Ein etwas unterlebensgroßer Torso eines Gottes von anmutiger Qualität. Gesockelt. Provenienz: Belgische Privatsammlung T. van der Eecken, erworben in den 1960er Jahren. Mit französichem Antikenpass.

Diorit-Büste eines Würdenträgers mit feinen Gesichtszügen, mandelförmigen Augen und einer glatten Perücke, die seitlich Platz für die Ohren lässt. Schultern,Brust und Bauchmuskulatur realistisch ausgearbeitet. Auf der Rückseite zwei senkrechte Hieroglyphen-Zeilen mit dem Beginn einer Opferformel. Darüber in Rot eine alte Sammlungsnummer. Gesockelt. Provenienz: Französische Privatsammlung, erworben am 26. Februar 1996 bei Tajan, Los 118. Mit französischem Antikenpass.

Ägypten – Ptolemäische Zeit, 332-30 v. Chr.
Zwei zusammengehörige Innenteile eines Sarkophagdeckels mit intensiver, polychromer Malerei. Ganz oben Lotusblüten gefolgt von reichem Halsschmuck. Darunter Götter des Totengerichts, die gleichsam auf den Flügeln eines Skarabäus mit Sonnenscheibe sitzen (Darstellung des Gottes Chepre). Darunter links und rechts zwei Horus-Augen und die geflügelte Göttin Maat, deren Feder beim Totengericht gegen das Herz des Verstorbenen abgewogen wurde. Die anschließende Bildfläche zeigt eine detailreiche Darstellung der Mumifizierung durch den schakalköpfigen Gott Anubis sowie eine Totenprozession, die von Anubis angeführt wird. Den Abschluss bilden hohe rote Lotusblüten sowie drei Kolumnen mit Hieroglyphen. Gesockelt. Provenienz: Belgische Privatsammlung, erworben am 4. Juli 1972 in der Galerie Carrefour. Etrurien – 4.-3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Vollbronze-Statuette des Meeresgottes Poseidon, das Gewicht auf dem rechten Bein, das linke abgewinkelt seitlich nach vorne gestellt. Über den linken nach vorne gestreckten Arm hat Poseidon einen Delphin gelegt, in der erhobenen rechten Hand hält er seinen Dreizack. Das runde Gesicht des Gottes ist bärtig, die Haare sind kurz, ein Haarband rahmt Stirn und Gesicht halbrund ein. Die Beine sind über einen Bronzebügel miteinander verbunden, was vermuten lässt, dass die Statuette einst ein hochwertiges Gefäß oder ein anderen Metallobjekt bekrönte. Hochwertiges Amulett aus Lapislazuli, das einen liegenden Steinbock zeigt, der seinen Kopf nach hinten auf die Schultern legt. Die Vorder- und Hinterbeine abgewinkelt, wobei sich die Hufe beinah berühren. Der Schwanz und die Hörner fein geriffelt. Zahlreiche Details im Gesicht und an den Ohren. Auf der Rückseite ein breiter, gebohrter Ring zur Aufhängung. Von selten guter Qualität. Provenienz: Aus der prominenten Schweizer Privatsammlung, Surena, Zürich, erworben vor 1980. Danach in amerikanischem Privatbesitz.

Kleine, auf beiden Seiten beschriebene Keilschrift-Tontafel aus altbabylonischer Zeit. Die vierzeilige Inschrift auf der Vorderseite beinhaltet zwei Quittungen für Gerste, die je acht Tage umfassen. Eine Zeile auf die Rückseite umlaufend. Schrift sehr gut lesbar. Provenienz: Sammlung Kaye Fredericks, USA.

Etrurien – 3. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Ausdrucksstarker Kopf eines Jünglings mit dichtem, lockigem Haar und feinen Gesichtszügen. Die Augen sind mandelförmig mit breiten Lidern, der Mund mit seinen ausgeprägten Lippen ist leicht geöffnet. Der junge Mann trägt die Toga nach römischem Ritus über das Haupt gezogen. Diese Besonderheit sieht man vor allem an Votivköpfen, die aus den etruskisch-mittelitalischen Heiligtümern stammen, die sich im römischen Einflussgebiet befanden (vgl. Lavinio und Capua). Römisches Reich – 1.-2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
Marmor-Fragment einer einst lebensgroßen Statue des Dionysos. Die Hand des jungen Gottes hält eine Kanne. Daumen, Mittel- und Ringfinger umfassen den Henkel auf der einen Seite, Zeige- und kleiner Finger auf der anderen Seite. Die Hand geht im rechten Winkel von der Kanne ab. Die Kanne, als Oinochoe zu deuten, hat einen ovoiden Körper, einen kreisrunden Ausguss mit Schnabel und ist innen hohl, wohl um einst Wasser daraus ihr rinnen zu lassen. Vergleiche zur identen Handhaltung die Statue des Bacchus aus Aldaia, heute im "Museu de Prehistoria Valencia". Römische Kopie eines griechischen Originals aus dem 4.-3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Hochwertiges Fragment eines Holzmöbels, das die geflügelte Isis stehend mit ausgestreckten Armen und Flügeln zeigt. Sie trägt eine rote Sonnenscheibe am Kopf, Flügel, Federn, Körper und Gesichtsschmuck mit reichen gelben, roten, schwarzen und grünen Farbresten. Ein Holzfragment von hoher Qualität. Die Rückseite in roter Farbe mit drei verschiedenen Sammlungsnummern. Provenienz: Französische Privatsammlung, erworben am 5. Jänner 1978 in der Galerie Carrefour in Paris. Levante – 8.-7. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Gehämmerte Bronze-Schale mit zentralem Omphalos, der von kreisrundem Punktdekor und einem Strichband umgeben ist. Das äußere Punktband dient als Grundlinie für das eigentliche Fries aus vier fein gearbeiteten Hirschen mit langen Ohren und prachtvollen Geweihen. Die Körper punktiert. Zwischen den Hirschen Bäume mit langen Ästen und großen Früchten. Unter dem Rand ein weiteres Schraffurband. Provenienz: US-Privatsammlung aus den 1980er Jahren. Danach Christie’s New York am 6. Dezember 2007, Los 541 (verkauft für 10.000 USD). Danach französische Privatsammlung. Mit französischem Antikenpass.

Griechenland – Frühes 7. Jahrhundert v. Chr.
Geometrisches Pferd mit aufgestellter, halbrunder Mähne und zylindrischer Schnauze. Die Augen kreisrund punziert, die Ohren aufgestellt. Der lange Schwanz reicht fast bis zum Boden. Die Beine kräftig und leicht abgewinkelt, die Hufe leicht nach vorne gezogen. Provenienz: Privatsammlung New York, erworben zwischen 1970 und 1980.

Römisches Reich – 1.-2. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
Arm aus feinkristallinem Marmor einer Zeus-Statuette, die wohl zu einer Figurengruppe gehörte. Das bestätigt der Anschlusszapfen hinter dem Ellenbogen. Zeigefinger und Daumen berühren sich an den Spitzen und hielten das heute verlorene Blitzbündel des Zeus. Die anderen drei Finger parallel abgewinkelt. Oberarmmuskulatur noch erhalten. Gesockelt. Provenienz: Sammlung Professor von Ohlendorf, München, 1970er Jahre. Danach Galerie Antiken-Kabinett Gackstätter, Frankfurt.
