Willkommen in der Welt der antiken Kunst
Wir freuen uns, Ihnen auch dieses Monat wieder zehn außergewöhnliche Kunstwerke der Antike anbieten zu können. Absolutes Highlight ist der Steinkopf eines Silenus aus der Zeit Alexander des Großen. Das hellenistische Meisterwerk, das der Literatur zufolge nahe Babylon gefunden wurde, war Teil eines großen Steingefäßes, auf dem sieben weitere Köpfe geformt waren. Von diesen befinden sich heute zwei im Museum in Teheran, zwei im Walters Art Museum in den USA, zwei stammen aus der Sammlung Ernest Brummer und wurden 1979 in Zürich versteigert, und der letzte Kopf gehört zur Sammlung F. Sarre in Ascona. Selbstverständlich kann kein direkter Bezug zu Alexander dem Großen hergestellt werden. Fest steht jedoch, dass ein Gefäß von derart außergewöhnlicher Kunstfertigkeit einem wohlhabenden Griechen zuzurechnen ist. Um wen es sich dabei handelt, wissen wir heute freilich nicht mehr. Was wir sonst noch zu bieten haben? Einen fantastischen Glaskopf der Phönizier, eine seltene etruskische Sphinx, ein Griffzungenschwert der Hallstatt A-Zeit mit wunderbarer Patina und vieles mehr.

Hellenismus, 4.-3. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Silenus mit langen Haaren, Oberlippenbart und Vollbart. Das Relief stammt von der Außenseite eines großen Steingefäßes. Literarische Angaben ("The Ernest Brummer Collection Vol. II", Zürich 1979; Friedrich Sarre "Die Kunst des Alten Persien", Berlin 1922) weisen darauf hin, dass es in der Gegend von Dinawar oder Kirmanschah gefertigt wurde (vergl. dazu auch Aufschrift: "No 3216 Babylonia"). Eine Gruppe von sieben sehr ähnlichen Beispielen sind dokumentiert: Zwei waren in der Sammlung Ernest Brummer (versteigert 1979), zwei befinden sich im Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, USA, eines in Ascona und zwei im Museum Teheran. Provenienz: Joseph Klein Collection, begründet in New York zwischen 1941 und 1980.

Stabförmiger Glaskopf mit gelben Gesicht, die großen Augen und dicken Augenbrauen in Blau und Weiß, mit türkisen Ohren und einem ebenfalls türkisen Mund, gelben Ohrringen und einem blauweißen Haarband. Hallstatt A-Zeit, ca. 800 v. Chr. Besonders schönes Exemplar eines Griffzungenschwertes mit breitem Mittelgrad und herrlicher Malakitpatina/Glaspatina. Winzige Ausbrüche an der Klinge (s. Foto), aber von selten guter Erhaltung. Provenienz: Sammlung Erwin Richter, Österreich

3. Jahrhundert n. Chr. Zweihenkeliger Krug aus nordafrikanischer Produktion (Sigillata Chiara A). Standring, langgezogener, eiförmiger Bauch, darüber schmaler, sich verjüngender Hals mit verstärkter Lippe. Auf der Schulter Henkel mit plastischem Zweigmuster und Punkten. Eine winzige Lochung im Korpus, sonst intakt. Provenienz: Österreichische Privatsammlung, erworben um 1980 im Kunsthandel.

6.-5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. Ungewöhnlich gut erhaltene Sphinx mit Frauenkopf (typisch griechisch-etruskisch) aus Terrakotta. Den Kopf schmückt ein Diadem, das eine geflochtene Frisur mit zwei seitlichen Zöpfen hält. Ein breites blaues Band teilt den gefederten Schwanz vom rot verzierten Brustkorb. Zahlreiche Farbreste. 340-320 v. Chr. Ein Eros mit Armband, Halskette, Ohrringen und Körperschmuck sowie ausgebreiteten Flügeln am Felsen sitzend. Der Gott mit hochgestecktem Haar trägt eine Stephane und hält eine Ente in der rechten Hand. Gepunktetes Eierstab-Ornament um den Hals des Gefäßes, an der Basis Mäander. Ranken in der Bildfläche, seitlich je ein ausgebreitetes Haarband. Mit schönen Details in Rot, Gelb und Weiß. Intakt. Provenienz: Wiener Privatsammlung H. S., erworben von den Eltern um das Jahr 2000 im Kunsthandel. Mit Kopien der Übergabe an den Sohn.

Welcome to the world of ancient art!We are delighted to present to you also this month ten extraordinary works of ancient art.
An absolute highlight is the stone head of Silenus from the time of Alexander the Great. This Hellenistic masterpiece of art, according to its literature found near Babylon, was part of a large stone vessel, which depicted seven further heads. Two of them are today in the museum in Teheran, two are in the Walters Art Museum, USA, two were in the Ernest Brummer collection, auctioned off in 1979 in Zürich, and the last head belongs to the collection F. Sarre in Ascona.
Of course a direct connection to Alexander the Great cannot be made. But for sure this vessel with its extraordinary artistry is to be attributed to a wealthy Greek. Who that person was, cannot be determined anymore, unfortunately.
What else can we offer to you? A phantastic Phoenician glass head, a rare Etruscan Sphinx, a sword from the Bronze Age (Hallstatt A-Zeit), a so called Griffzungenschwert with a wonderful patina, and much more.

Hellenistic, 4th - 3rd century B.C. The surface of the stone with a brownish-grey coating, Silenus with long hair and moustache and a full beard, from a large vessel with a convex exterior, inscribed with a inventory note 'No 3216 Babylonia'. A group of seven similar examples are said to originate from Iran, from Dinawar or Kermanshah (Lit.: "The Ernest Brummer Collection Vol. II", Zürich 1979; Friedrich Sarre "Die Kunst des Alten Persien", Berlin 1922). Two are from The Ernest Brummer Collection; two others are in the Walters Art Museum (accession nos. 21.1-2), Baltimore, USA; another in Ascona; and two others in the museum in Teheran. Provenance: Joseph Klein collection, formed in New York between 1941 and 1980.

3rd century A.D. Two-handled jug from a North African production (Sigillata Chiara A). Foot rim, elongated, oval body, above a slender, tapering neck with a strong rim. The handles originating from the jug shoulder depict vivid leaf motives and dots. Small drill hole, otherwise intact. Provenance: Austrian private collection, acquired in the 1980s at the Viennese art market.

6th-5th century B.C. Extraordinarily well preserved terracotta Sphinx with a female head (typical Greek-Etruscan) wearing a diadem, with an elaborated plaited hairdo with two braids. A broad blue band divides the feathered tail from the red decorated chest. A lot of paint remains. Intact. Provenance: German private collection

340-320 B.C. With the figure of a seated Eros on a rock, wearing anklets, bracelets, body chain, necklace and earrings. Hair bound with fillet and wearing a radiate stephane, holding a duck in his right hand. With tendrils in the scene, on both sides an open fillet. On the neck of the vase a dotted ovolo band, a band of meander encircling below. Details in red, yellow and white. Provenance: Private collection H. S., Vienna. Acquired from the parents of the last owner in 2000 at the Viennese art market. Accompanied by a copy of handover from the parents to their son.
