Description: Very fine bronze as with the portrait of general Agrippa and emperor Augustus minted in Nemausus, today Nimes. In the portrait Agrippa is to the left with the “corona rostrata”, the “Naval Crown”, which was awarded to him after the successful battles at Naulochus and Actium. Augustus wears the “corona civica”, the “Civic Crown”, which was regarded as the insignia of imperial dignity. Above the inscription IMP, and below the portrait DIVI F for “Imperator Divi Filius” (Imperator, Son of the Divine). In the reverse a crocodile is depicted, which is chained on a palm and stands for Egypt. The inscription reads COL NEM for Colonia Nemausus. In Nemausus the veterans were settled, who successfully fought under Agrippa in Egypt and subdued the country. The present coin is intended to commemorate this victory.
